Next up is Filipina-American, New York based artist and illustrator Cin. All proceeds of her piece “It’s an Honor just to be Asian” will benefit the New York City chapter of National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, NYC Chapter.
Tell us a little bit about yourself: where you're from / you & your family's background.
A: I'm a Filipina-American, born and raised in New York City by parents who both immigrated from the Philippines in the 1970s.
Can you elaborate on the artwork you made: The story behind it . Personally, what does the art symbolize to you?
A: I originally created the lettering ("It's an Honor Just to be Asian") on the shirt worn in the illustration a few years ago when Sandra Oh won her second Golden Globe becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win more than one of those awards. Because of this, I was inspired to illustrate her words because to me, as an artist, it's always a win to see someone of my descent representing the creative arts. Recently, with the rise of Asian hate crimes happening, I decided to combine it with a new illustration to put out something positive on my feed. It's an honor just to be Asian, no matter what. Be loud, be proud even through these trying times.
What does the organization you chose mean to you and why that specific one? Why do you feel others should be aware of it & supporting it as well?
A: As both a women and of Asian descent, I chose this organization because it's women specific and all inclusive and dedicates its work to a multitude of issues from human rights, social, reproductive, immigrant & economic among Asian women, non-binary and intersex. Support for an organization like this is needed for those of you who believe in equality and justice for all, especially for minorities.
