Next on the spotlight is New York born illustrator Jerry Ma with his piece “Wu Can Do It” supporting the AAPI community fund.
Tell us a little bit about yourself: where you're from / you & your family's background.
A: Made in Taiwan but born in New York.
Can you elaborate on the artwork you made: The story behind it . Personally, what does the art symbolize to you?
A: I created this piece a couple years ago actually...before the release of the film Crazy Rich Asians. I wanted to draw Constance Wu in the We Can Do It Rosie the Riveter pose as she was about to take on a heavy burden representing not only strong women, but Asian Americans as well. She was now in a position to show other Asian Americans that we do exist and we're allowed to not only be seen, but take on center stage.
What does the organization you chose mean to you and why that specific one? Why do you feel others should be aware of it & supporting it as well?
A: In light of all the racism towards Asian Americans...it's always been there, but really become next level racism starting February 2020, I am hopeful that there can be some money raised for the gofundme/aapi charity. I've already donated 100% of the proceeds from my online sales during April to the amount of $2494. And would be honored if my work could somehow raise some more for the charity as well as awareness. Thanks for the opportunity.
